Newcomers Guide To Edmonton
The Newcomer's Guide to Edmonton features 63 pages of essential information to help new residents settle in our beautiful city. Translated copies are available online or in print in English, Amharic, Arabic, Mandarin, French, Punjabi and Somali.
New residents are also encouraged to phone the City of Edmonton's 311 line which has interpreters for over 150 different languages for those who speak languages other than English.
You Can Benefit
You Can Benefit Navigator is an online tool that provides community workers and Edmontonians easy access to information on a range of local, municipal, provincial and federal benefits and subsidies. This will reduce financial barriers for low income Edmontonians. In 2016, nearly 100,000 Edmontonians were considered low income, meaning that 11 per cent of the City’s population can be considered to be living in poverty. You Can Benefit is a partnership between E4C, the City of Edmonton with End Poverty Edmonton, and BetaCityYEG.
Responding to Homelessness in our Communities
The City of Edmonton and its partners are working together to connect people experiencing homelessness to supports and housing. As citizens, it's not always easing knowing which number to call or what to do! This is how you can help. For individuals who have no home, winter can be a dangerous time with increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Print this quick reference on steps you can take to help someone during the winter months. One of the resources listed is the Winter Emergency Response Guide 2017-18 which includes information on winter shelters, extended drop in hours, warming bus schedule, food, clothing and referrals to services. View it online at: homewardtrust.ca/WER-guide/ or edmonton.ca/homelessness.
